Helping visitors come back to Leeds city centre safely.
A whole host of the city’s shops are open for business, offering the distinctly different mix of high street and independents for people to experience which Leeds is loved for.
With restrictions on what you can and can’t do and operating guidance for businesses going through a change or two, here’s a little help in navigating the latest COVID-19 updates so you can visit and enjoy Leeds city centre safely.
Please remember to follow three simple actions – wash hands (regularly and for at least 20 seconds), cover face (in enclosed spaces) and make space (at least 2m apart or 1m with a face covering or other precautions).
Wearing a face covering is compulsory in enclosed spaces – that means inside shops and including shopping centres, and for those customers in hospitality venues which are open (cafes, bars and restaurants). Staff working in retail and hospitality also now have to wear face coverings.
Face coverings must be worn on public transports as well as in private hire vehicles and taxis.
Businesses and venues must display an official NHS QR code poster (as part of Test and Trace for the NHS covid-19 App) for customers to ‘check in’ as an alternative to providing contact details. It is still a legal obligation for one member of every party of customers / visitors to provide name and contact details.
A queue system will be in place for pedestrian areas on main streets, pavements have been widened e.g. Boar Lane to enable social distancing. Businesses are able to get FREE stickers from Leeds City Council.
Extensive signage, lamp-post flags, on-street markers and boards will direct people and remind shoppers of the core measures for staying safe.
Changing delivery times for commercial vehicles (i.e. reducing them) to remove the danger of delivery vans and queuing people coming together on pedestrian areas, so access will stop between 9.00am and 7pm (previously 10.30 – 6pm)
LeedsBID Street Rangers & council cleaning teams will disinfect benches, handrails & other street furniture to ensure health & safety but enable people to use them too.
Open in most shopping centres & large stores and at Leeds Station.
Hand sanitiser is available around the city and in stores – think about bringing your own so it’s always at hand.
Please make use of the recycling points around the city. There are more than 80 on-the-go recycling bins – yellow for empty plastic & cans, orange for empty coffee cups. The Council are working extra hard to keep the bins clean.
Certain areas in the city now require you to wear face coverings upon entry. This includes shops, supermarkets, shopping centres and enclosed transport hubs.
Full government details can be found here.

Fully operational with social distancing measures in place to assist waiting passengers.
Fully operational with social distancing measures in place, clear signage and markers. Shops open. One way system in place around the station so plan ahead and allow more time for your journey.
Trains running with distancing measures in place in Leeds. Masks to be worn.
There will be a supply of taxis (can be hailed or queue at a taxi rank) and private hire vehicles, but possibly not in the numbers you may have been used to in the past. If you are planning to travel by taxi or private hire it is best to contact your operator and pre-book, and check if they have any additional requirements, such as limits on the number of people per vehicle, and face coverings. This would be especially important if anyone from your group is a higher risk.
A number of taxi associations and private hire operators have fitted extra screens between the driver and passengers, and this may enhance your safety and risk of passing on or contracting Covid, but limits passengers to the back seats of vehicles.
Operators and taxi associations require drivers and passengers to wear face coverings, and may decline to take you if you are not wearing one.
Some changes to the roads/pavements- Council’s temporary footway widening schemes to accommodate social distancing on Mill Hill, Call Lane, St Paul’s Street, Great George Street and New York street, Boar Lane.
Walking and cycling will be prioritised, with more cycle parking provided.
Running on a regular basis
Passengers must wear face coverings
Max 8 people at one time
Only contactless payments
Permanent changes underway on City Square, The Headrow and Greek St. Corn Exchange.
