SPIRIT

Leeds Train Station
NEWSUBSTANCE’s SPIRIT installation hovers above commuters as they progress through the railway station concourse. Internally lit by LEDs, this huge, ethereal figure shines a calm, festive light as people rush and hurry through the season.

NEWSUBSTANCE are a UK studio who specialise in dramatic, bespoke performance structures. Having created such iconic installations as Download Festival’s Bull Dog, the world’s largest disco ball (meeting and exceeding Nile Rodger’s challenge at Bestival in the Isle of Wight), and an aerial sequence mimicking the famous Progress album cover for the live Take That Tour, NEWSUBSTANCE now bring their talents into the Leeds Train Station.

Their huge installation, named SPIRIT, is suspended above busy commuters as they progress through the railway station concourse beneath it. SPIRIT ties the city of Leeds and its textile history into something more magical, as lengths of blue and yellow thread keep this superhuman form aerial over our heads.
